Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
An important contributor to successful electronics manufacturing is the application of as much possible preproduction information. New designs or proof of concept builds may propose an ideal assembly package during initial printed circuit board layout and bill of material development, incorporating every customer expectation.
However, mechanical or electrical attribute conflicts often appear during actual manufacturing decreasing efficiency, raising costs, impacting functionality, or hindering repeatability. Unique safety or regulatory impacts may also affect total design investment cost but remain unidentifiable during pre-prototype development. Much less tangible and intangible asset investment is required when DFM optimization occurs pre-launch to those unforeseen expenditures.
When QMS partners with our customers on the front end, our expertise and manufacturing knowledge enhances a smooth transition from concept to hardware minimizing cost, complementing our customers’ ability to satisfy delivery commitments, and reducing potentially negative engineering design changes.
Even stable, mature designs may experience DFM enhancements when reviewed through a fresh perspective. The QMS DFM team’s intellectual wealth combines several hundred years of total quality, production, and engineering electronics manufacturing experience in board configuration, stencil design, component pad optimization, panelization, surface finish, component packaging, and many additional design attributes affecting an assembly’s manufacturability. Both manufacturing technology and components are in a state of continuous advancement. DFM allows existing designs to apply those same advancements and quite often, deliver a financial or operational return. The QMS DFM approach creates essential pre-launch confidence while identifying stable design manufacturability enhancements.
When QMS partners with our customers on the front end, our expertise and manufacturing knowledge enhances a smooth transition from concept to hardware minimizing cost, complementing our customers’ ability to satisfy delivery commitments, and reducing potentially negative engineering design changes. In a volatile production environment and constant expectation demand changes, the design for manufacturability approach enables increased agility during program development. Globalization, accelerating short cycle expectations, and restrictive budgeting continue driving a “get it right the first time” marketplace expectation.
Electronic assembly development cannot withstand traditional time to market cycles. Peak value through initial manufacturability design enables a competitive advantage. QMS is committed in applying our unmatched electronic manufacturing service (EMS) expertise and partnering to optimize your application.
